Summertime Grom – Corinne Clegg

We always like to have a “grom” on our team. If you don’t know what a “grom” is, click here! The youthful energy of someone who is seeing the world through excited eyes and is always super fired up about everything is just nice to be around. This is the first time we’ve had an Amiga return as staff and we’re really looking forward to having 20 year old Corinne help us out in June and July. To get to know a little bit about her, check out her story below:

As a young girl, I started swimming almost right when I could walk. I’ve had a weird obsession with water from then on, always going swimming constantly in my pool, or the lake where I spent a lot of my childhood visiting.  To this day, I’m in a pool, Jacuzzi, or the ocean at least once a day. I was truly a water baby from day one. I started surfing at age 8 and fell in love with the surf camps and would stay after hours in the water. People would call me “smiley” because no matter what I was doing I wouldn’t stop smiling. I was a very happy kid. On top of that, I was very competitive at a young age and would constantly try to race kids in the ocean or the pool. I did junior lifeguards for years which was extremely competitive and I would surf for hours and get chili cheese fries or mexican food every day of the summer as a treat to myself for working hard. I have always had a passion to be good at everything and anything, so naturally I really wanted to get good at surfing because I loved the ocean so much. Since I was young I have always loved reading and getting to know new people. My greatest joy is found in helping people in any way I can.  I spent almost every day in high school at the beach either before or after school. I got into surfing even more around my Sophmore year, at Bolsa Chica High, long boarding with my mom and my close friend. My friend helped me to work through my struggles, and was always pushing me. I loved long boarding and just recently started short boarding within the last three years.

I joined the surf team at Huntington Beach with my 3 best girl friends and in the mornings we woke up threw our surf stuff together, goofed around and cheered each other on to catch waves. It was great. After surfing, we ate donuts and big breakfasts at Sugar Shack and then would all nap at my house before school.  We loved to go to “Old Mans” San Onofre and Trestles to shortboard. Our other favorite spot for the weekends, was Ventura’s C Street, Cardiff, and Blacks Beach. There probably wasn’t one day I didn’t show up to school with wet hair. We were living the life of “Blue Crush”. I always was a tomb-boy though so It’s always been more difficult to find girls to surf with and do fun stuff, so when I find them I am overjoyed.

In college I competed on the Long Beach Surf Team before I decided to study abroad in Italy to immerse myself in a completely different culture. Last year was the first time I went out of the country to El Salvador with Surf With Amigas and I loved everything the camp did and stood for.  It’s the kind of mentality I want to always embody which is “no matter what it’s all good and were going to conquer our fears and have fun.” The idea of teaching other girls to surf and help them through the process I went through really excites me. That way girls like me can find other girls to surf with at home to live the grungy beach life style, as well as share the fun with others. There’s nothing that would make me more happy than to help people learn and believe in themselves.

Introducing Skyla and Michelle, two East Coasters who have joined the Surf With Amigas team for the first part of 2014.

Skyla Lamberto-Egan – Surf Instructor

Skyla grew up the youngest of 5 (3 brothers and a sister) on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Shes been active in the water since she was a baby, whether it was boogieboarding, bodysurfing, longboarding, shortboarding or just building sandcastles on the shore. Her father and brothers taught her to surf and with her sister shredding nearby and her mom charging it on a bodyboard, a deep love for the ocean quickly developed.

Skylas travels began with family camping trips down to Sebastian Inlet, Florida and since then she has made it a goal to go somewhere every year. Working in a seasonal, tourist industry centered town, Skyla is able to take a break from massaging and waiting tables to venture out into the world. Any escape from the cold, winter winds delights her senses and inspires her to keep going. She currently has been to Central America, Spain, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, Thailand and all over the United States.
When Skyla isnt in the water, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Bonfires in the backyard, relaxing on the beach, watching sunrises, casual bikerides, or making fun activities like crafting kites out of paper bags, chopsticks and a lot of tape. Shes always down for an adventure and loves to meet new people who are active and ready to try new things!

Michelle, 23, was born in Black River Falls, Wisconsin and moved to St Petersburg, Florida at the age of 6. Growing up fishing, playing softball and a few musical instruments she was not introduced to surfing until the age of 15. That first wave was all it took and she was hooked. Surfing instantly turned into a passion. Her parents were unsupportive but as soon as Michelle was 16 she drove across the state every weekend to surf the Atlantic side of Florida and learned to surf. She picked up a few small sponsors including Nekton surf shop, NXTC shapes, Zinka, and DNA energy drinks. With the support of Tommy Daniels shaping her boards and coaching, Michelle started avidly competing, surfing small waves in ESA and local pro-am contests all around Florida. After that, she decided to start traveling in search of better waves in between school and work. At the age of 19 a close friend brought her and her friend Nina to Puerto Rico. They loved the perfect Caribbean waves and took many trips back to PR to surf. Since then Michelle has traveled to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and El Salvador. She is currently taking classes online and working at the Don Cesar hotel on St Pete Beach florida, when not surfing with and inspiring Amigas.

The Grom in El Salvador

We have a rotating “grom” post with Surf With Amigas. First there was Nadia, now we have Holly Bendall. A feral 20 year old British former pro BMX rider who has a very cute accent and likes to quietly suggest directions to Amigas, as in “outside” and “paddow!”

During her second week working with us, she did an awkward duckdive directly underneath an Amiga dropping in and ended up with a severe fin gash across the back of her heel. Good thing she is such a tough chick. While sitting out of the water, she shot photos of the girls and kept up a positive attitude.

Check out her edit from her trip to El Salvador.

Instructor Profile – Nadia

One day Nadia was minding her own business out surfing the Boom (gnarly tubular wave rarely surfed by girls) when Holly paddled over and started in with 20 questions. “what’s your name? where are you from? where are you staying? how long are you here? have you ever taught surf lessons? want to come work for me?” It’s rare to see smiling girls out shredding with the boys and Nadia was out there with a big smile, paddling around and dropping into bombs. She spent a few weeks in November with Surf with Amigas and came back for two months this summer. We hope she’ll be back again! This is why….

Meet Nadia – Instructor for June/July Retreats

Nadia is a very excited, trippy, hippy, funky, frothy, shredder. She grew up bouncing between San Diego and Hawaii, so she’s pretty good on her surfboard. She likes cold beer, reggae music, and galloping on horseback down the beach. She has a big soft spot for skinny Nicaraguan dogs.

Basically, she’s a lot of fun to hang out with. If you come on a retreat in June or July 2013, you’ll see what I mean!
