At Surf With Amigas Surf Yoga Adventure Retreat for Women, we focus heavily on creating a culture of support and encouragement. When you get a great ride, or your first ride, or a big wipeout, the first thing you’ll hear is enthusiastic cheering from all your new Amigas! No matter what we are here to support you in achieving your goals. We’ll also give back to the local community, participate in a sea turtle protection program, do yoga, and have other awesome adventures.
This is the highlight video from the first week of November.
Surf with Amigas hosts retreats to improve your surfing whether you have never surfed before or are ready to work on more advanced maneuvers. Here’s the highlight video from our first ever advanced longboarding retreat featuring guest instructor 2xWorld Longboarding Champion Jen Smith. The ladies worked on cross stepping nose riding and style in some really awesome waves at our Northern Nicaraguan location.
Surf With Amigas surf and yoga teacher Cherise Richards takes us through some exercises and stretches that will help you prepare for your trip. Strengthen arms, core, legs, and back, then stretch them out to increase mobility so you’ll be more prepared to perform your best on day 1 of your retreat. Keep this program going after your trip to stay in shape back in the “real world” too! Check out the video!
We posted the video a couple of days ago with some suggestions on how to practice your tube riding from the comforts of solid land. An Amiga who will be joining us on our first tube riding clinic at the end of October was inspired and sent in this video of her on her skateboard riding under a conveniently “hollow” tree branch. We love it!
Getting barreled is the best feeling in surfing. Surf With Amigas has begun offering advanced level retreats geared towards helping guests learn to get their first tube ride or improve their tube riding technique. Here are a few tips to help you practice before your trip even if you don’t live near hollow waves. Click Play above!
Our Southern Nicaragua retreat is a great one for ladies of all abilities. There are super cute user friendly waves to ride right out front and some more challenging waves for the more advanced surfers within walking distance. Check out our highlight video from the retreat in late July.
This retreat highlight video represents the best of Surf With Amigas all-level retreats. Our Northern Nicaragua location is open to all ability levels – whether it’s your first time touching a surfboard, or you’ve been surfing for years and want to take it to the next level, or just take a worry-free surf trip with other supportive ladies! This week was a particularly awesome mix of abilities which allowed us to break up the group so that everyone got the right amount of support and challenge.
In July we had our first ever dedicated Advanced Retreat in Northern Nicaragua. It included tons of surfing and lots of classroom sessions to help the Amigos become better surfers. Of course on top of the surfing and learning there were tons of other fun activities and true to any Surf With Amigas surf yoga adventure retreat, there was lots of dancing and silliness and fun! At Surf With Amigas, we love to find ways to help out the community members wherever we host retreats. That means anything from improving schools, to making sure indigenous kids have school books, to encouraging women in sports. On a retreat in July we had a couple of returning Amigas join us who work for Vans and one of them is also involved in a really cool non-profit called Boards for Bros.
Boards for Bros is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization fully committed to providing equipment, safe skate spots and youth mentoring originally in Tampa, Florida but now across the US and even internationally.
Why skateboards? The magic of a skateboard is that it a mode of transportation in addition to being a tool for play, a tool for discovery, a tool to develop physical skill, a tool to interact with others who share an interest in skateboarding, a tool to teach problem solving and a tool to teach perseverance . It is good for the mind and the body. It is fun. It can change someone’s life.
Sarah Turner and Megan Klempa came on their retreat with just a backpack full of their own gear and two suitcases filled with skateboards. One day during the retreat the Amigas assembled the boards and hooked up with some local kids at the new “End of the Road” skatepark in Asseradores. The ladies were blown away to see these super stoked kids skating barefoot, so much that Sarah and Megan immediately gave the kids the shoes off their own feet! (click play above for the video!)
It was a super fun and inspiring afternoon. If you’d like to get involved, check out http://boards4bros.org.
If you’re coming on a retreat with us in Northern Nicaragua and have an old pair of skate shoes (or even just regular sneakers) lying around – particularly men’s sizes, but the boy’s aren’t picky if the shoes you bring are pink! – please bring them down and we’ll donate them to the skatepark!
Our first every dedicated advanced retreat was a success! There are so many awesome photos and videos that we’ll be uploading them little by little. See below from some of the highlights from the first couple of days as the Amigas were just getting used to their boards and the new spots. After several days of coaching, they took it to the next level… we’ll be posting those photos next! Stay tuned.
If these waves look good to you, join us on one of our upcoming advanced retreats! All of our retreats are open to all levels and we have instructors available to coach advanced surfers every week. But these dedicated advanced retreats include more classroom sessions and more time spent surfing (vs. other activities). Check out the schedule here: Advanced Surf Coaching Retreats
