Falling in Love with the Ocean

We love keeping in touch and hearing from Amigas after their week with us. Sometimes it’s an email to ask for suggestions on what type of board to invest in. Sometimes it’s a photo of ladies who met on a retreat in wetsuits in the snow, or in Cabo, or at Coachella. Other times it’s a note of gratitude like the one below. Roisin joined us on our Southern Nicaragua Retreat in 2013. Thanks for sending Ro!
This email is really about sending a BIG overdue THANK YOU to You, Jackie, Nadia and Nikki for being instrumental people in a life changing year that was 2013. I knew something new and cool was on the horizon for me. I just couldn’t figure out how the fuck to get there! Until Surf With Amigas.

Divorce, an ailing father, quitting my shitty job in New York City and a big nudge from my friend Emily all led me to the Amigas. I went down with a HUGE fear of the water, a weakened spirit, and out of shape muscles. Holly you got me on my first wave and I will never forget it!! Looking at the video, not sure who was more excited you or me! Either way, I got home, hit Mondos, near Rincon, caught the first wave I went for and rode it all the way to the parking lot!
Since then, I have taken up Stand Up Paddling boarding (shhhh….) (it is really good for your core, and the waves are more predictable), leased a horse and ride waves when I can. More importantly, I LOVE the water!! I paddle my SUP board like its a surf board and there is always white water to tackle and waves to ride. (although I haven’t actually done that yet..lol) My buddy is also an avid boogie boarder, fins etc…so water sports abound!!
My point is without the four of you giving me the confidence to ENJOY our beautiful oceans, my time here in Cali would be wasted. Every Sunday I am out there paddling with the dolphins and the seals. I always jump in the water for a swim and we are bringing our masks and snorkels tomorrow and heading out to the reef for more exploring.
 It is impossible for me to be in the water without thinking of all of you.:)
In short, Thank you for getting me to the place I was meant to be.
Fuck Yeah!! and Namaste:)))
~Roisin

If you know how to ride whitewash but want to learn how to ride a green wave, or know how to drop in but want to learn how to angle, or can do all that but want to cutback – this is the perfect retreat for you! There are 2 surf spots directly in front of where we’ll stay – a fun right good for intermediate surfers, and a super user-friendly left great for beginners. The world-famous Popoyo break is just a 10 min walk down the beach for anyone who wants to check that out too! In the South, the wind is offshore all day 90% of the time, so we’ll surf at least twice a day until your arms are complete noodles!

Check out what a past group of retreat ladies had to say about the spot, and why you shouldn’t second guess your decision to come! As Kristin said, “Just do it! Because I’m glad I came and had another adventure in my life!”

Waterfall Yoga with Nikki

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhBOez8Gp5o]

We are so blessed to have Nikki Belcher as our yoga teacher at Surf With Amigas. She is gorgeous inside and out, has a calming, healing presence, and inspires a restorative practice. There was so much prana/energy at the waterfall in the cloud forest that Nikki decided to do a little free flow sequence.

July in Nicaragua

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vB6W6lZZRY]

This is an adventure that takes place in July in Northern Nicaragua as a group of Amigas on a Womens Surf Yoga and Adventure retreat learn to surf and outrun a lightning storm on horseback. You may have seen the photos but the video tells the true story.

Big Waves, Rum shots, and Volcano Dancing

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWxC2yocRt8]

Drop a jalapeno rum shot into a glass of club soda then drink it down. Hike to the top of an active volcano, put on an orange jumpsuit, and boogie it up before sliding down. Paddle out to super cute overhead waves, admire the pelicans, paddle in, and charge down!

This is how we do it! It’s not just about surfing, it’s about enjoying every minute with a new set of awesome Amigas!

The Definition of “Gnarly”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaCTjrQ7Or4]

You’ve heard the word gnarly but what does it mean? If you come on a retreat with Surf With Amigas you’ll hear “gnarly” used quite a bit. It can be good, it can be bad, it can be awesome! Here’s a little tutorial on what to expect if someone tells you Surf With Amigas women’s surf and yoga retreats are “gnarly!”

Feeling Empowered by Surf With Amigas

At the end of retreats, we usually pick a few ladies and ask them their favorite experience of the week. Was it the surfing, the horseback riding, the opportunity to share awesome adventures with new like-minded friends? Of course it’s usually all of those things, but this week Kara summed it up in a way that I hadn’t imagined, but really like. She said, “Every day there’s an opportunity to overcome fear.

A lot of ladies come down with a fear of the ocean, horseback riding, or volcano boarding, but with the support of eachother and the staff at Surf With Amigas you end up feeling totally empowered, bad ass, and like you can do anything! That’s our goal!

Meet Amigas Yoga Teacher Nikki

Nikki Belcher has been teaching yoga for Surf With Amigas for a few months now and she is awesome. She is very spiritual, in touch with the moon, and just exudes a calming healing energy. She has recently learned to surf, so she understands the mindset necessary to overcome fear of the ocean and big waves, and also the right yoga moves to stretch out tired paddling muscles.

She also has a new website called the Fairy Lounge.
