First Look at a Costa Rica Retreat

Our first ever retreat in Costa Rica was a great success. Super cute long peeling lefts in warm water with great friends. The girls were cruising and shredding and loving life on the edges of the jungle. Everyone improved so much over the course of the week. We’re loving this place and looking forward to the retreat starting up tomorrow.

If you know how to ride whitewash but want to learn how to ride a green wave, or know how to drop in but want to learn how to angle, or can do all that but want to cutback – this is the perfect retreat for you! There are 2 surf spots directly in front of where we’ll stay – a fun right good for intermediate surfers, and a super user-friendly left great for beginners. The world-famous Popoyo break is just a 10 min walk down the beach for anyone who wants to check that out too! In the South, the wind is offshore all day 90% of the time, so we’ll surf at least twice a day until your arms are complete noodles!

Check out what a past group of retreat ladies had to say about the spot, and why you shouldn’t second guess your decision to come! As Kristin said, “Just do it! Because I’m glad I came and had another adventure in my life!”

New Instructor for May – July : Chloe Buckley

We are excited to welcome a new instructor to the Surf With Amigas family, 23 year old Chloe Buckley from San Diego, CA.

Chloe Buckley grew up in Del Mar, California. She started surfing in grade school and fell in love with the sport. If you couldn’t find her at school that was usually because the waves were good and she always showed up to everything with wet hair. She began competing at the end of high school.

In June 2010, at age 19, she won the Surfing America National Championship. From there she joined her college surf team and took first place in the state and third in the nation. After that she spent 2 years traveling and got to compete in a few ASP events in Australia and Peru. Now she’s back in school and looking to finish up and figure out her next set of goals.

She has experience teaching surf lessons and typically teaches a group of young girls between the ages of 5-10 to surf. “I love teaching these young girls how to surf. It’s a great feeling to help them get over their fears of the ocean and help show them they can do it all on their own.”

In her free time she likes to draw and paint and absolutely loves live music. Sun, sand and surf remain her priority and spreading STOKE will always be a part of her daily activities.1016595_10201318624025055_697551983_n

March 1-8 Highlights and other Awesomeness

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIiLDdb6iaQ]
The first week of March was the final retreat of our 2014 winter series. The Amigas got super lucky with an unseasonable solid swell that saw the point light up and some ladies pushing themselves to get the biggest/best waves of their lives! A bit of foreshadowing of the season to come… We start back up in Northern Nicaragua at the end of May. Check out the schedule tab for details!

A Good Day at the Bay

[youtube=http://youtu.be/B889nRnTPZA]

On the last day of the retreat most of the Amigas were already surfed-out and tired. We happened to have a pumping swell (particularly for December) and great conditions, so Holly paddled out and got a few waves herself while some Amigas watched from the shore break.

Escaping Cold Weather to a Warm Water Paradise

Our December retreat scored super awesome conditions with all day offshore winds, a few small days of surf to get the Amigas warmed up, and then a few days of bigger waves that allowed them to get the best waves of their lives. Of course there were awesome sunsets, plenty of silliness, and delicious cocktails sprinkled throughout the week. Standard! Love sunsets, warm water, and surfing with new friends? Come play with us!

Boat Trip to the Island Point

[youtube=http://youtu.be/8V3OTmSuHWE]

On a rare December swell with good winds and a couple of shredding Amigas, we took a boat out to the island for a solo session. The wind was fierce and some of the drops were hard to make, but we each got at least one good one.

I was paddling out after a wave and saw Sherrin paddling into a huge wave. It was by far the biggest wave to come in all session and there she was at the top of it, ferociously paddling in on the 8’2″ NSP. I sacrificed myself into the whitewash so I wouldn’t get in her way and duckdove as she popped up to her feet, made the drop, and rode it all the way in! Unfortunately, it was not captured on video. Wah wah…. But I can assure you that it was awesome!
