Sarah Beardmore Spoofs on The Sexy Warmup Dance

[youtube=http://youtu.be/JQbF9wvqlpw]

Sarah Beardmore is an intelligent, super shredding, and hilarious British/Australian surfer that i’m honored to call a good friend. We spent years getting into trouble all over the world while I was on tour (she was the instigator), and recently caught up after long-time-no-see at my wedding last March. After viewing the Anastasia Ashley Pre-Surf Booty Dance Video, I wondered when someone would make a spoof. I was ecstatic when I learned that someone was my good friend Beardmore.

When asked about what’s wrong with women’s surfing, Sarah had this to say:
“I believe the problem with women’s surfing is that the girls set precedent by posing naked for magazines such as Stab Mag. You just have to read the comments written by men with sticky hands on their keyboards to know they are not our target audience. It seems any female surfer who doesn’t take part in these shoots or support this side of the industry are not listed or recognised as the best surfers in the world, and are called butch. I really don’t see this happening in other sports but if they do decide to take their top off, they are equally applauded for their sporting accolades and achievements. The lucky couple who are marketed as athletes do not need to follow this precedent and neither do those with ex pro surfer male family members. Perhaps the companies should stop hiring ex pro male surfers to market the women… maybe this is where the encouragement is coming from.”

We are trying desperately to get Sarah as a guest instructor on a retreat. Maybe Philippines in 2014?

Pre-Surf Booty Dance by Anastasia Ashley – Hot or Trashy?

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kt1aV4GFIxY]

I’ve known ‘Stasia since she was a tiny shy 11 year old living in Hawaii flying over to California to compete. At the time she was touted as the “next big thing”. When she was 15 and I was 21, we had some serious battles in the amateur leagues. She’d win when the waves were small, I’d win if there was swell. We had a fierce rivalry exacerbated by her overly-involved and overly-competitive mom who would come and rub it in my face if her 15 year old daughter beat me.

In high school, Stasia separated from her mom and took a break from serious surfing. The “next big thing” claims faded away. I wondered what happened to her. A few years later we ran into each other at a casting call for a Microsoft commercial and reconnected briefly. Fast forward another few years and we were both working as stunt doubles for 90210 and spent the whole day in “hurry up and wait mode” in the trailer, which gave us plenty of time to talk of the past and our silly rivalry.

Anastasia is now focused on traveling, surfing and modeling. It seems to be working well for her. She’s been called the “World’s Sexiest Athlete” and has been on the podium at the Women’s Pipeline Pro more than once. You may know her from the awesome wipeout we featured on the  How to Avoid Wipeouts post.

I was kind of surprised when I came across this video of her “warming up” for her heat at the SuperGirl Pro in Oceanside this summer, although considering the combo of modeling and shredding, maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised. The video caused a stir and got a ton of hits. It was clearly great PR.

I’m wondering what you think? Does she look hot? Or does she look trashy? Please comment and let’s get a conversation going!

How To Avoid Wipeouts – A Couple More Paddles!

Anastasia Ashley and I use to do battle over 1st place finishes back in our amateur days. We have since become good friends although I don’t get a chance to surf with her very much anymore. So it was with a mixture of competitive “ha ha!” and friendly “yikes!” that I watched this video of her getting destroyed by a late drop at a gnarly reef pass in Micronesia.

I then thought that it was an entertaining and instructive video on what not to do. If you notice in the clip, the problem is that she doesn’t fully get into the wave before standing up. She takes a few paddles and pushes to her feet, but the wave hollows out beneath her, and she air drops, landing in the flats, and then face plants and bounces as the wave swallows her.

What could she have done? Taken a few more paddles! If you watch her try to stand up at the top of the wave, she gets held up in the lip for a second. On a wave like that you really need to paddle down the face a bit. Even in “normal” waves, it’s a trend I see a lot with Amigas – trying to stand up too soon before they are really into the wave. If this is a recurring problem for you, try taking a few more paddles! The next time you’re out surfing, think about it. Take as many paddles as you normally do, and then take a few more before you stand up.
Feel free to come back, leave a comment and let us know how it worked out for you!
Happy shredding!
