Pre-Surf Snack Idea from SWA Yoga Teacher Nikki

nikki yoga startNikki Belcher is the resident yoga teacher at Surf With Amigas and also our dietician, spiritual advisor and moon expert. She is a new mama and also a surfer. Here she gives us a taste of her favorite pre-surf snack.

Often times before I head out for a surf, I want to eat something that is filling and power fueled yet something that is light enough that I don’t feel overly stuffed while paddling out. My go to pre-surf (or post-surf second breakfast dessert) snack is:  peanut butter and banana on toast topped with chia seeds.

But why is this simple and easy snack oh SO good?

pb Peanut Butter: preferably homemade without all the added sugars and oils, peanut butter is a great source of protein (building and repairing muscles) and healthy fats (reduces risk of heart disease).  One of the highest foods in the B vitamin Niacin, peanuts can help turn food into energy and keep your skin, hair, eyes and digestive system healthy.

Banana: convenient, creamy and sweet, bananas are known for their high potassium. Adding a banana into your daily diet will help maintain normal blood pressure and overall heart function. Low in fat  and high in fiber, bananas also help keep your digestive track well regulated.

chia Ch-ch-ch-Chia!: a member of the mint family, chia seeds are either white, black or both. Highly nutritious, ‘Chia’ means strength in the Mayan language and the Mayan and Aztec warriors used these tiny seeds as their main source of fuel during conquests. Chia seeds contain one of the highest known plant based sources of protein and essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega -6). This means they are loaded with energy and brain power! They also contain soluble and insoluble fibers – which act as a ‘massage’ to your colon – increasing elimination and detoxification all while decreasing inflammation. The fiber also absorbs large amounts of water, making you feel fuller longer and prolonging hydration. Loaded with antioxidants, calcium and iron chia seeds will make your heart, bones, blood and cells happier and healither! With zero flavor and very few calories, you can sprinkle them on fruits and salads or add them into your granola or smoothie for an extra power punch!

How to make:

* toast a piece of your favorite bread

* slather on peanut butter

* slice one banana on top of peanut butter

* sprinkle about one tablespoon on chia seeds on top of banana

* eat and enjoy 🙂

yum

During a recent family-friendly retreat we had 13 year old Miely join us with her filmmaker dad, Ananda. Meily loves yoga and is currently training to be one of the youngest certified yoga teachers ever! She is from San Diego and surfs regularly, but really stepped it up in Nica during the retreat and scored some awesome rides.

Heal Negative Energy with Smudging

smudge 2

To open every yoga practice I like to light an incense or burn sage. Students often ask what I am lighting and why. This powerful offering is known as smudging.

Smudging is an ancient |Native American| practice used for healing and energy clearing. Often used in ceremonial and ritual spaces, the burning of herbs is said to purify and protect the physical and spiritual bodies.

It is best to light your choice of herb/plant from the flame of a candle and set a clear intention as it begins to burn. If you are cleansing a room, move the smudge stick in a clockwise direction around the room. It is good to spend extra time in the corners of the room because this is a place where energy can become stagnant. If you are smudging yourself or another person, move the smudge stick in small circles around the body from head to toe. If there is a place in your body that needs extra care, attention or healing it is nice to spend a few moments over that area while calling in a positive intention/affirmation/mantra.

Two of my favorite plants with which to smudge my home, my practice space and myself are:

Sage; said to increase intuition, it is used to ward off evil spirits and negative energies. it offers protection, blessings and clearing.

Palo Santo or ‘Holy Wood’ ; meant to raise your vibration, enhance creativity and bring good fortune. a mystical tree that grows on the coast of South America, it’s scent is both grounding and uplifting.

other suggestions: cedar, sweet grass, myrrh, copal and frankincense

Collect the herbs, light a candle, and smudge! Please let us know how it went and how you feel afterwards.

February 14th Retreat Highlights

This particular week we had particularly difficult conditions. The tide and wind didn’t really cooperate but that’s just a part of surfing! The Amigas were mostly beginners and they stepped up, handled the tricky conditions and learned so much! We also avenged our loss from the previous week and beat the local kickball team 14-13 in a very exciting game! So fun!

Instructors Surf

During retreats our job as instructors is to make sure the Amigas get great waves, learn something new about surfing, and have an awesome time. Of course, there is a chance for us to get to catch a few waves as well. While we make it a point to give all the best waves to the Amigas, sometimes we’re able to sneak a few good ones for ourselves. Here’s a silly little video showing some behind the scenes action from the Surf With Amigas Instructors in February.

Amira Holmes : from Amiga Guest to Amigas Instructor

During one of our El Salvador retreats this past year we met an awesome Amiga named Amira who lives in Panama and was raving about the great waves in her current hometown. She was so successful at convincing us that we added two Southern Pacific Panama retreats to the schedule for 2015. She will be one of our instructors and our surf guide. Those retreats are unfortunately already sold out with ladies on the wait list, but we will hopefully add more for 2016. In the meantime, check out what Amira is all about!

Amira Richa Holmes : 30 years old, Panamanian, “in love with surfing”

Amira is an architect who lived in Panama City all her life…until she got hooked on surfing.  Her first time was in 2006 in Australia, while she was doing an internship.  Upon returning to Panama, she borrowed boards so she could spend time in the ocean catching waves.  At 23 years old, her father finally showed his support of her dreams and gave her a surfboard.  However, he quickly took it back after she devoted more time to surfing than to her studies.  She completed her thesis a year later, making her family and herself proud.  Her favorite graduation present was the return of her beloved surfboard.

Amira was unsatisfied in the city because she craved the beach, sand between her toes, sun on her skin, and clear blue ocean.  She needed to find a way to combine her love of surfing, nature, design, painting, and creating.  She moved into a surf shack in Cañas, near Venao, and started pursuing her dreams.  A short time later, she bought a small farm in the town of Tonosi.  She proudly grows her own vegetables and takes pride in creating something really special.

Amira loves to travel the world in search for waves and nice people.  She has fully explored Panama as well as Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Peru, California, Florida, and Brazil.  The next countries on her list are Indonesia, Australia, and the Hawaii.

You can find Amira’s artwork on the Instagram and Facebook pages of Bongzaii.  Her hand painted hats are popular all over Panama and she receives photos of her hats ‘round the world.  Her most popular designs are of the surf breaks here in Panama.

Amira wants more girls in the lineup!  She wants to pass her love of surfing on to you!  She hopes to see you soon in the beautiful Pacific Ocean in Panama.

Through the Eyes of an Amiga

A very talented photographer named Abbey Moore came as an Amiga to our retreat in Northern Nicaragua about a month ago. After the trip, she blogged about the experience and shared some of her amazing photos of the camp, the amigas, and life in Nicaragua. Check out her words and pictures below, and her full blog post here.

This is going to be a massive blog post. It’s really hard for me to even believe that I was actually in this magical place in Nicaragua less than a week ago. While I was there – the girls and myself kept saying – this seems like a dream. Over two years ago I found out about SURF WITH AMIGAS in Nicaragua (run by pro surfer and super-mom Holly Beck) and I have always come up with some dumb excuse not to go. Too much money, I’m afraid of surfing, I don’t know how to surf, too much travel time, etc etc. Well – this year was the year that I finally decided I was going no matter what – and I couldn’t be more happy that I did. Despite the fact that I missed my flights the first day and had to spend my first evening of travel in a sketchy hotel in Miami (Thank you Dad for helping me find a place to stay at all) … this trip was incredible. Everyone kept asking if I was nervous that I didn’t know anyone coming on the trip – but I had this feeling if you are a girl and you are able to take a week off to come on a trip to surf and do yoga in Central America … you’ve got to be pretty cool. And damn – everyone was the coolest.

Five amigas and myself were picked up from the airport by Luis in what looked to me as the most stereotypical surfer van I’d ever seen. (Pictures below in the iPhone section). We had a three hour drive ahead of us – and since no one’s phones could work (YES!) we listened to reggae and TALKED for three hours. I cannot stress enough how different this is than being in a car in the US with my friends. I mean – we were so very present. By the end of the van trip I could probably tell you ten facts about each of the gals I was traveling with – oh and we each drank two beers too … so that helped. We were greeted by hugs from our Instructors (hollaaaa Ginger, Jackie, Emily and Inga!) and led to our cabanas. Okay true life – I am terrified of bugs. Like – I hate them so much. Even little ones. I am not too embarrassed to admit that I am a total baby and am usually the roommate that traps the creature under the cup and waits for the other roommate to find it. Well walking into the cabana the first thing I see is this mutant black cockroach/grasshopper creature on my mosquito net. I decided then and there this week was about letting it go and trying to man up a little bit. I put my suitcase down and walked out the door hoping that when I came back – the bug one would be gone. And he was. But I know he was definitely still lurking around somewhere because he popped up a few times later in the week.

EL COCO LOCo where we stayed is so incredible. It’s an eco-friendly resort founded by three college friends a little over five years ago and is used to host mainly yoga retreats and surf and service retreats. They have a non-profit organization, Waves of Hope, that is doing some AMAZING things in the community. You can check out more at theirWEBSITE. I have to say – staying at an eco-friendly resort was something entirely new to me – but I really loved it. I felt so fully connected to nature as I could fall asleep every night to the crashing of waves and the sounds of mutant grasshoppers (jk – there were also beautiful sounds like birds and dogs and well, lets just focus on the waves). But staying here truly felt like I was outside for a week straight – which for those of us in the midwest know – it’s going to be a few months before we can have that feeling again. It was seriously magical. AND THE FOOD. First breakfast, second breakfast, lunch, dinner AND DESSERT. All of the meals were incredible. Almond crusted fish, pesto vegetable sandwich, a pasta dish TO DIE FOR and so much more. I don’t think I’ve eaten that well in years.

And the surfing. So – the closest I’ve come to surfing is when I’m standing on my paddle board and a boat goes by and I catch the wake for like .5 seconds. Yet – by Day 2 I was “shredding” as they say. Holly and the instructors are the most positive and happy-go-lucky instructors I have ever met. They are so encouraging and everyone is so happy when you catch a wave that it only makes you desire to do it more. There’s no such thing as not celebrating after catching a wave with them. You throw your hands in the air and cheer (at least I did). I know this is probably the cheesiest thing – but I truly believe that I was meant to learn to surf someday. It’s like it has combined every activity I’ve ever done – and it’s all been toward this trip. Being out on the waves on the board – even if it was choppy or frustrating – was the best therapy I think I’ve ever had. Waking up at 5am for dawn patrol was no problem – as I popped out of bed as excited as I am on Christmas morning. Now I am just in an incredible state of depression as the only surfing here in Michigan happens when it’s snowing and you’re wearing a full sized wet suit. I think I’ll have to plan my next trips all around my newfound love.

The yoga was equally as satisfying. At first – I was so bummed to hear that it would be a more yin/restorative class as I was all amped up to show off my vinyasa moves and handstands and whatnot … but after the first surf session I completely understood why the yoga was the way it was. That’s yoga for you – always humbling. Nikki was the most incredible teacher – always giving us the perfect intentions to think about, the perfect poses to restore and rest ourselves and I swear I left those classes more energized and zen then I’ve ever left a fast hot and sweaty vinyasa class. She’s amazing that Nikki. Not to mention the yoga studio sits up high on stilts overlooking the ocean with no walls. This trip has spoiled me in SO many ways.

And lastly – the people. There were 14 amigas on this trip and 4 instructors. They are all such incredible people and on such different paths of life. We’ve got the historical Genie who is 68 and shredding harder than any of us (see an inspirational video of her HERE).There were gals in their 20’s like me, there were girls in college, there were girls in there 40’s, there were girls in their upper 30’s that looked like they were in their 20’s, there were girls with kids, girls with boyfriends, girls who were married … basically the perfect assortment of people. And they were all there to squeeze out every bit of experience they could. And when I got sick the last two days – these ladies stepped up and cared so much about my well being it was overwhelming. I mean – offering to give me whatever drugs they brought (it’s amazing when you’re not near a doctor how much you realize you miss TYLENOL) and just offering to get me water, sprite, anything at all. These gals were the best. I’m so excited to have a whole new gang of frothers to visit all over the world.

If you’re a girl and you like traveling and you like new experiences … you need to take this trip. It’s worth every penny and then some. Everyone who went on this trip was hitting waves by the end of the week – better than they had ever imagined. Everyone was restored, relaxed and happy. Traveling solo is something that I will always encourage. It teaches you to grow, lean on strangers and make new friends. My web of connected people is growing immensely and I couldn’t be happier about it. This trip, these people and these waves are something that I will always remember. So – enjoy the pictures and check out the sites I linked above for more info! The last photos in this set are from my iPhone too – as I didn’t have my camera with me as much as I thought I would.

Holly Tests Out the Body Glove Breathe Surf Leggings

I’ve been rocking Body Glove swimwear since I was 17. The company focuses on creating women’s swim, surf, and active wear that is super functional as well as super cute. For many years I was active in helping them design women’s wetsuits and bikinis that would be comfortable and stay on while surfing. Over the last few years, since I moved to Nicaragua full time, I’ve been a bit more out of the loop, so I was really excited to learn that Body Glove was launching a new line of women’s active wear called Breathe that included yoga pants and surf leggings. Check out the video…[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ktx–QRWyAA]

I got myself a couple pairs of the surf leggings and have been trying them out the last couple of days during a retreat. Not only are they really cute (see photos for evidence), they are also really comfortable. Yesterday I wore them from 5am to 5pm non-stop with two surf sessions, breakfast, lunch, and some beach coaching mixed in. I highly recommend them!
