Our second retreat of the season back in Nicaragua was awesome. We had a slightly smaller group but as usual, there were some great personalities. After a few cocktails at the French Guys, we settled into some rocking chairs and told a very interesting story….
In the first episode of our new series “Surf Completely” Holly Beck talks about how to turn your surfboard. This is the first step of learning to surf after the very basic part of standing up and riding is mastered. Watch and learn and remember to “use your boobs!”
Normally, we do retreats in Eastern El Salvador at a spot called Las Flores. This time, we followed a tip to a location in Western El Sal that turned out to be a lot less crowded and super interesting. We dubbed it an adventure and exploration retreat, and that it was!
We were pretty bummed when we saw the forecasted big swell since the spot we were staying liked smaller swells, until we heard a rumor about a secret left that could handle big swells. It turned out to be amazing!
After surfing, we cruised up to the cloud forest and showered in a waterfall. Check it out!
We’re headed back to this part of El Salvador in October. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for more info!
“I initially sought yoga as a physical balance to enhance my surfing, snowboarding, basketball, and other high impact sports; I soon discovered yoga as a deep and transformative practice in my life. I developed a deeper sense of compassion and confidence while strengthening the connection between mind and body, and the relationships with the people I love.
I’ve been practicing yoga since 2006, and completed my 200 hour yoga teacher training in April 2011 with Semperviva Yoga studios. I am Yoga Alliance Certified in classical Hatha. I was fortunate enough to study with such inspirational teachers as Seane Corn, Janet Stone, Gloria Latham, and Cameron Gilley. I have been teaching since April at various studios in Vancouver. I have also completed a number of classes for charity organizations (such as Easter Seals) with plans to continue weekly charity classes in June and July with 100% proceeds going to my favorite charity, Waves of Hope.
My classes are a mix of Hatha and Vinyasa Flow, integrating alignment, core work, and breathing techniques with basic poses and creative sequencing. Each class is designed to energize the body, calm the mind and give greater vitality and health. It is my dream to take students to Nicaragua to practise yoga and experience the raw beauty of the country and it’s people.

Waves of Hope is a community-focused non-profit working to improve the lives of the people of Northern Nicaragua. After noticing that very few kids were attending school regularly they came up with a program to reward attendance. If a kid went to school every day of the week, on saturday he or she could go surfing! School attendance has improved dramatically!
20 year old Helina Beck is a model, surf instructor, and college student who will be spending six weeks in Nicaragua helping out with the July retreats.
