New SWA Instructor Releases Surf Film

One of our newest surf instructors, Florida grom Jazmine Dean,  just spent her first season working retreats and adventuring with the Surf With Amigas crew down in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. She created this super rad little surf film and just released it last week! Enjoy the film and a note from Jaz below-

Pura Vida!

 

My life changed in the season I spent down here as a first time Surf With Amigas instructor just as much as Amigas often say their lives change during retreats. I’m currently still down in Southern Costa Rica and I’ve spent more consecutive months living here than I have spent living in any other foreign country before. I spend my free days in-between retreats almost the same as I spend my, “work”, days during retreats, and most of my closest friends down here were formed through the connections and roots that SWA has created here in the local community.

This film barely scratches the surface of how this life has reconnected me to my roots as a soul surfer and the good times had. I understand surfing and have for a long time, but these retreats are just as much about personal growth as they are about surfing a wave, and for that, I thank the guests, our Amigas, so much.

I’m most grateful of all for the women I’ve met through the retreats and I took a little from each person I spent time with. It’s possible that some of you reading this were on some of the retreats I worked at and maybe even appear in a scene or two! Anyways, please enjoy the film and thanks for watching.

Feeding Monkeys and Catching Awesome Waves in Costa Rica

On a retreat in Costa Rica in June, the group scored some big waves, and had awesome interaction with nature. Hand feeding monkeys, incredible caterpillars, and awesome beach moments. Surf with Amigas all women surf yoga adventure retreats in Costa Rica are the best!

We are getting down to the very end of our rainy season retreat series in Costa Rica with just one more retreat starting up today. This location is amazing! Check out the video above from a retreat in June that was just uploaded and let us know if you’d like to join us in the fall when we start up again! November retreats are already sold out but we do have some space in December and beyond!

Coed Advanced Retreat in Costa Rica

Our first Co-Ed Advanced retreat in Costa Rica was amazing. All the guests improved their surfing after 1:1 surf video coaching and in water encouragement. We got nice medium sized waves most of the week and surfed a variety of spots including right out front, a super long rippable left point break and even took a boat trip to the other side of the gulf for some longboard action.

Classroom surf theory sessions

In between surf sessions there were surf theory classroom sessions. One session covered aspects of style and all the participants were encouraged to try a soul arch. You can see that those soul arches were nailed! Other classroom topics included learning about the differences between surfboards (fins, rails, bottom contours, materials), how to read a surf forecast, how to get more waves in a crowded lineup, and the essence of style.

Uncrowded surf

Surf With Amigas focuses on locations where we can take over the lineups and get a ton of waves. It’s true that Costa Rica can be crowded, but not every surf spot is full of people. We will find empty waves! The area we’ll stay is further off the beaten path of tourists. We will stay surrounded by jungle, watching monkeys jump from tree to tree. We’ll surf with sea turtles. We’ll watch scarlet macaws fly overhead.

Costa Rica Adventure Video with Returning Amigas and Mother Daughter Duos

This was a particularly awesome week for Surf With Amigas Surf and Yoga Retreats in Costa Rica. It was our last retreat of the series in Costa Rica and we went out with an incredible group of ladies of all ages including many returning guests and a few mother/daughter duos. There was surfing, yoga, hiking in the jungle, horseback riding, and of course lots of dancing and playing.

On Wave Coaching with Surf With Amigas

Surf With Amigas has been taking our surf coaching to the next level in Costa Rica lately by offering on-wave coaching. One of our surf instructors will ride the wave with you and coach you while riding alongside. It’s super helpful to be reminded of all the things you want to remember while enjoying the excitement of riding the wave. Here’s a sample from an awesome group of ladies who joined us in Costa Rica and seriously improved their surfing. A few of them had been to multiple other surf camps but said they’d never had on-wave coaching and had never improved so much. That’s our goal!

Surfing Through A Hurricane

Surf road trip! November is usually dry and sunny but when an incredibly rare unseasonable hurricane Otto showed up to dump days and days of rain, we took a road trip from the rain forest of the South to the relatively dry Playa Hermosa! We had an awesome crew of Amigas and Amigos to laugh and surf with and everyone had great attitudes. You can’t control the weather or the ocean, but you can control your attitude.
