So many of us seem to be in search of that timeless travel fantasy. That of the intrepid explorer on the existential, perennial hunt for a pristine slice of paradise. Or that of perfectly crested, empty waves, tucked into a soft sand haven of coconuts and endless summer shred.

The Balis, Byron Bays and Biarritz’s of the world, with their populous swells and all too often intimidating line-ups of jocking bros and bras can all too often intimidate the tentative and budding surfer. Especially the XY chromosomed surfer. But for those with an adventurous soul, those who seek the unknown and the exhilaration of the journey in search of untouched breaks and exploration, taking that unknown, mysterious path, slightly off the beaten track, often leads to the most fulfilling and rewarding of shred odysseys. As Jack Kerouac, the beatnik king of travel prose so poetically penned, “Live, travel, adventure, bless, and don’t be sorry.”

Central America has been well chronicled in surfer’s travel guidebooks. Handfuls of Americans gradually began trickling down into Costa Rica and Mexico during the 1960s, hungry for empty breaks after hearing whispered tales of nature’s barreling promises. Fast forward a few decades, and the once elusive breaks that entranced the first intrepid voyagers are now happily packed out and a staple destination for any global surfer. Nicaragua, however, the largest of the Central American territories, was characterised by periods of political unrest and revolution, stability only coming to the equatorial tropic in recent years. Pockets of plucky surfers have slowly been exploring the verdant and diverse haven, and the mounting murmurs of balmy plentiful surf, welcoming and warm locals and unblemished pockets of paradise has been creeping into the adventurous surfers conscious. Thirsty for those promises of warm shred and discovery, it didn’t take much more than a couple of conversations with former ASP tour surfer Holly Beck, who is now based in Nicaragua and runs the Surf With Amigas surf camps throughout the year for those with a more gutsy disposition, and I was on my way. The scent of adventure and alluring warm waves dissolving any anxiety of my transatlantic solo voyage some 6,000 miles around the globe.

Julia’s New Skills Earn Her Competitive Success

A few months ago we had Julia “the grom” Van Raalte participate in a retreat in Nicaragua. We worked with her on competitive strategy like waiting for the biggest waves, and surfing strategy like going all the way to the bottom then all the way to the top of the wave. I got really excited to receive the following email from her talking about her newfound competitive success. See below and cheer with us for Julia!

Hey Holly,

Just wanted to tell you about some of my latest happenings. I recently competed in the year’s first ESA comp and had a great time. I followed your advice to put my sick middle-turns away, and placed 2nd in my age group, and then 2nd again in the Open Women’s division. For the latter, I won $300! It was so much fun to be at the beach, see friends, and make new one’s while catching some cute waves! Attached are pictures of my best wave from the Women’s Open heat and one of the awards announcement for Open.

On a slightly different, but equally exciting note, my Dwart came in, and it is absolutely beautiful! I’m going to paint it up this weekend and hopefully send you a picture or two of the finished product.

Sunny Morning Surf in the Philippines

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrFQxLc8taw]

Super cute waves, gorgeous water, sunny mornings. Life is good in the Philippines for our first of two women’s surf and yoga retreats. We wake up, get on a boat, paddle out to empty waves, duck dive in super clear water, and cheer for new friends. So sweet!

Riding Water Buffalos in the Philippines

New retreat activity – Riding Water Buffalos!

[youtube=http://youtu.be/5e07xMsoNxk]

We had no idea what to expect when 9 girls showed up to ride water buffalos. It turned out to be a hilarious afternoon booze cruise to the top of a hill with a gorgeous view and then the craziness really started – racing them! A few of us fell off, and we all got a great ab workout from laughing so hard! Check out the footage!

Dance Party

We like to boogie. We know how to get down. We are usually in bed by 9pm so we can get up early and shred, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t time for a little Salsa!

Meet Nadia – Instructor for June/July Retreats

Nadia is a very excited, trippy, hippy, funky, frothy, shredder. She grew up bouncing between San Diego and Hawaii, so she’s pretty good on her surfboard. She likes cold beer, reggae music, and galloping on horseback down the beach. She has a big soft spot for skinny Nicaraguan dogs.

Basically, she’s a lot of fun to hang out with. If you come on a retreat in June or July 2013, you’ll see what I mean!

How to Say Rum in Spanish

[youtube=http://youtu.be/yPPKytv2fEA]

If you want to be cool, you’ve gotta say it right. Ready?

Ron.

Try again.

RRRon.

Really get into it this time.

RRRRRRRRon!

That’s better.We took a tour of the Flor de Cana Rum Factory in Chichigalpa and learned how to taste 18 year old rum like a pro, and correctly pronounce it the Nicaraguan way – “ron!” Then headed back to the beach for a super fun session with some returning Amigas. Shredding!
