Happy World Oceans Day!

There are a whole lot of random holidays cluttering up the calendar, but today is one of those that we are excited to celebrate! June 8th is World Oceans Day! It’s a day we give thanks for the ocean, its importance in our lives, and put extra thought into how we can protect it for future generations.

Passing a love of the ocean on to future generations.

This years theme is; “preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean.”

Like a heart and lungs for Planet Earth, the ocean is important in

•Generating most of the oxygen we breathe

•Helping feed us

•Regulating our climate

•Cleaning the water we drink

•Offering a pharmacopoeia of medicines

•Providing limitless inspiration!

No matter where you live, your actions affect the health of the ocean, as we are all part of the same watershed. Today, as you catch a wave, cast a line, or just take a walk on the sand, take an extra moment to appreciate and say a thank you to the majestic ocean. If you see a few pieces of trash, pick them up. Get a friend involved, grab a younger sibling, or your kids. Spread the word and see how much trash you can pick up!

One great organization working to raise awareness on the trash issue is the Australian-based Take 3 Campaign. Every time you go to the beach, grab 3 pieces of trash to do your part. If we all get involved it will make a huge difference.

Do Your Part

Here’s a few small things you can do to be a steward of the ocean every day!

1. Use “ocean safe” sunscreen free of harmful chemicals

2. Pick up 3 pieces of trash every time you visit the beach

3. Use a reusable water bottle and reusable food containers

Together we can make a difference so that future generations can enjoy clean and safe oceans and coasts. future generations, learn to surf, protect the ocean, costa rica, world oceans day
